Empowering Communities to Better Health was a Webex seminar that brought together a worldwide panel of experts in energising people to improve their own health.
Outlining the key steps to engaging with people to co-produce healthy, resilient communities, participants heard how Community Organising can deliver improved health outcomes from within communities, with healthcare services supporting citizen-led movements for change.
This linked to the NHS Wales emphasis on prudent healthcare and the drive to co-produce services that truly meets the needs of people who rely on health services.
Hahrie Han – Associate Professor of Political Science at Wellesley College, author of How Organizations Develop Activists: Civic Associations and Leadership in the 21st Century, and co-chair of an advisory group to Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Jonathon Gray – Director, Ko Awatea, New Zealand, and former director of the 1000 Lives Campaign in NHS Wales. Jonathon is recognised as a leading authority on healthcare improvement and innovation.
Alexandra Nicholas – is the leader of the Handle the Jandal Campaign, a community youth-led campaign, aimed at improving mental health and wellbeing among young people in South Auckland.
Chaired by Professor Peter Bradley, Executive Director of Public Health Development, Public Health Wales, the seminar featured other experts as part of the discussion.
