On February 7, 2017 Betsy deVos was confirmed by the senate as Secretary of Education. Immediately after, Pittsburgh public school students organized a strike and protest that would take place the following day, against DeVos and Pennsylvania senator Pat Toomey's vote for her.
"We protested against the nomination of Betsy DeVos as the new Secretary of Education. She is underqualified as an educator, uninformed of the practices of public schools, and overall just another stand in who lets her money speak for more than her words. She wants to defund public education and redirect tax payers money to funding for profit charter and private schools, making it nearly impossible for some children to get their education, such as undocumented immigrants. We marched to Patt Toomey's office to voice our opposition of his vote for her, practicing our 1st Amendment right and our civil duty to call out political injustices such as not representing his constituents entirely. The protest was set during school to pack the hardest punch and establish our resolve for this problem. We fear for our future. We fear our right to education is being threatened by yet more bureaucracy. But we stood together today, more than 200 students, in solidarity for all underrepresented students and minorities alike." - Alex Jacobs
